Verizon told me (Re: part of Greg's reply) that I can cancel the "spare" line on my account which is on a monthly plan, provided the device has been paid for in full -in other words, any upgrade eligible line- for a roughly $50 termination fee.

So... I dump the spare line and activate a new line. Will I get the same number? Not sure. Didn't ask since I don't really use it.
