• Phone is free only when a new line is started. U have to pay extra money for the new line......then why you want to keep it in safe?

• You should want to activate it right away as it is most likely better that n your current phone and if something goes wrong you can always go back to use your old phone if you want.

• The free phone requires activation of a new line, so you wouldn't be able to leave the phone with no service. If the free phone could have been put against an existing line I would have gladly taken it and updated both my and my wife's phones.
