You trade in an existing phone to AT&T. The list of phones they will accept, plus what you receive is listed on their sales page.

AT&T provides discounts based upon trade-in. It’s on their website. As far as I believe, anything above an S9 or S10 grants you the full discounts. Also you may trade in any I phone from Series X and higher for the full rebate price. I’ve just completed three upgrades with AT&T. This will be my last upgrade of devices fired a while. The way AT&T works Trade-ins, you may not pay the phone off early, as your discount is divided equally over thirty months. Paying off the balance would void your upgrade rebate.

You can save "up to $900, with trade in". I'm assuming in order to get the max $900, you would have to trade in a very recent model phone (probably the Galaxy S20 Ultra).
