No more free upgrades. Phone is full price unless you get the discount and maybe credit for the phone you turn in. BB will activate it in store because they want the kickback they get from Verizon.

The way I understand it, is that Verizon has 2 options: Buy the phone outright at full cost in order not to have a contract, or, Start a contract and agree to a payment plan for one or two years. During that contract they divide up the total cost of the phone and add it to your monthly bill. So you are still paying the full cost of the phone, just over time rather than all at once. As a means to upgrade, Verizon never offered me any discounts or benefits for getting a new phone. To me "eligible for an upgrade " just meant I could get a new phone without extra fees or penalty, like having to give them my old phone back. However, if the discount you're asking about is one through best buy, then yes, you should be alright to buy the phone you want at Best Buy's lower rate, and activate it through Verizon. I bought my S8 while Best buy was offering it for $300 off, and agreed to pay it off over 2 years, so I'm locked into that cheaper price and it's corresponding cheaper monthly rate. In fact, I just had them activate the new phone with my Verizon account before I even left the Best buy store. If you do buy a Phone not through Verizon however, you do still have to pay their $30 activation fee.
