I have tried using the internet a few times while I was on the phone and from what I can tell you cannot do it unless you are connected to wifi.

I have heard with newer devices on the NEW sprint network we will have the capability to talk and surf at the same time. I was told this while buying the HTC Bolt expecting it to have that capability. Of course the Sprint sales rep lied so I really haven't heard any conformation.
