If you trade in your phones they need to be in MINT condition. No dings, knicks, scratches, cracks, camera & speaker working, etc. Might as well keep them as a backup in case your new phone breaks or you lose it. You cannot trade in 2 old phones for 1 new phone. If you activate your S5 with Verizon, there is no contract, you pay just the monthly fee for service usually $20 and you can cancel any time.
