Yes you can. Since your activating the new device your given the option to keep your number, or get a new phone number and it does depend on what carrier you have. But most of the time, you keep your current phone number, they just port it to your new phone.

Please try again later.If you buy a carrier-locked one (like AT&T) and you already have AT&T, you'd simply switch your SIM card from the old phone to the new and would still have your number. If you buy a carrier-unlocked one, it would work the same way. If you are going from, say, AT&T to Verizon they will work with you to 'port' your number to the new carrier. In all 3 cases you do not lose your number.
