“Will this be compatible with the Galaxy Note 8? It would seem like forethought on Samsung's part to make it compatible with all the S8 series of phones. I can't see customers going out and buying yet another Samsung VR headset for 1" more of a screen.”

I'm sorry but I actually googled this same question last night and on Aug 23 when they announced the Note 8 they also in background news launched a NEW "Note 8" Edition to accommodate it.... I know I'm upset too as I have the 2016 ver of the Gear VR (that I got with my Note 7....but we all know what happened with that) and finding out that I need to buy a new Gear VR just b/c the Note 8 is 1/10th of a inch bigger is wrong...
