Yes, this Chromebook can handle 1080p videos smoothly.

It plays 1080p videos from YouTube smoothly including displaying to an external TV through the HDMI port. I have not tried HD videos from another site. At the time I had a fast cable connection to the Internet so I don't know how it will work with less bandwidth.
