The device will TRACK steps, sleep, and exercise while not being hooked up to a phone. However, you can only see your step count and minutes of activity on the device; to see sleep results, you must connect to your phone and use the S Health (or other) app. You must also be connected through Bluetooth to your phone to receive alerts for texts, calls, and apps. This is how I use mine: I turn my Bluetooth on and connect the phone and device when I want to receive phone notifications on my wristband. I turn bluetooth off when I don't specifically want that info. I sleep with bluetooth off to conserve battery. In the morning, I connect again with bluetooth to send data to my phone and app.
