I bought this for exact same reason. I even bought a adapter from amazon so I could hardwire it to my ATV. So I did hardwire it to wires where it only takes power if the key is in ON position. But the problem is once battery dies and you reconnect it to power supply you physically have to press the button on the unit for it to turn on. So it's basically useless to me unless I want to track it for couple of days only .

For your use case, you would probably need to hide it from plain sight (since you wouldn't want the thief knowing it was there). The battery life is the biggest concern for a device this small. I put it in my truck's glove compartment and it only lasts 2 days if fully charged. You can extend the life to 3 or 4 days, if you can plug it in to a portable charger that doesn't automatically turn off. They do make tiny 5000 mAh portable chargers. I have one for this very purpose. The Smart Things app does have some settings that can prevent the device from shutting down. Otherwise, the device goes to sleep and never wakes up unless someone is there to push the button. Hope that helps.
