Yes, it is compatible with Macs and is also dual platform if you partition the drive and format that partition portion in another format ie. PC(Windows). Format it on the Mac beforehand and set it up as a MAC OS extended journaled. A lot of times it will ask you if you want to use the newly formatted drive as a time machine back up drive after doing the reformatting. Eject and re insert the drive into the Mac and it will usually realize it is a time machine possibility and ask accordingly. if not, open MAC time machine app and choose it as the destination for time machine backs and enjoy!

I have not used it with time machine, but I am using it as a boot disk to speed up the iMac load times. Should work fine with time machine as well.
