- Answer This is a solid state external hard drive. It has no moving parts and uses special memory chips instead of a spinning platter. This makes it VERY fast! You would use it anywhere you would need an external hard drive. For me, I use it with my Xbox One X, so that my favorite games load up extremely fast.

QuestionHow long is this external drive known to last? I've used of other marks before & lost info or was locked out after 3 years of constant use

- Answer Obviously I can’t speak to this specific device, but I have a couple of SSD drives that are still running six years later with no apparent issues. I would suggest that you consider the use case and make your choices accordingly. If you are using a drive to make regular backups, I would recommend replacing it every three years, which jibes with your experience. Speed, capacity and price should make that a favorable time anyway. There is also the difference between “have to have” and “nice to have” backup protection that only you are equipped to decide. This drive wouldn’t be my first choice for backup storage, where capacity is more important than speed. This is a blazing fast external drive, but it’s capacity is only 500 gb. I use this as a caching drive and it’s worked wonderfully for that purpose and it’s small size makes it highly portable.

QuestionI can't figure out how to transfer files? Do you just open a 'File Explorer' window for the source location and open a second 'file explorer' window for the T5 and drag and drop the files you want copied? OR does it actually have file mgmt software?

- Answer Connect the SSD to your device. On Windows, open File Explorer, and it should be located on the left side, drag any file from another window or desktop to the SSD’s location. I found it best to open two File Explorer windows side-by-side to see the transfer easier. (Ex. One window would be Documents, and the other would be the SSD) On a Mac, same as above, and you can open different tabs if you don’t want separate windows. On tablet or phone, go to file manager and move the files to the ssd through a long press. Go to settings to automatically download to the SSD, if it’s always connected

QuestionOnce data is backed up on the T5 may it be downloaded onto a different computer from the one initially backed up from. If I buy a new computer for example, may I download the data on the T5 to the new computer?

- Answer It comes with a software that can walk you through a PC backup but I did it manually because it was easy. This drive is super fast and would highly recommend it over tradional external hard drives.

QuestionDoes this have included software that does automatic backups? Or is this just more of a fast SSD thumb drive? Not a techie so I do not want to have to be doing a bunch of downloads or configurations to get it to backup.

- Answer I asked the same question when I got mine as I expected to see some kind of software. It's actually pretty simple. I just open 'file explorer'. Under 'files', you can open another window. One window shows the files on your computer and the other shows the external drive. Highlight the files you want to copy and just drag them into the external drive. Good Luck!

QuestionThe more I read, the more confused I am becoming. Will the Samsung t5 save from my iPad mini? I need to know more about needing a USB adaptor. My pc is old, althought it runs well, so it probably does not have a USB 3 port. Thanks

- Answer USB 3.0 ports typically have a blue plastic strip just inside the opening... check your computer. If the piece just inside the port is white, those are typically USB 2.0, which will work with the drive, but will be SIGNIFICANTLY slower.

- Answer Yes, there are two cables included in the box - a USB Type C 3.1 cable, and a USB Type A 3.0 cable. You can choose the appropriate one to connect to your computer.

- Answer Yes you can save and move game files to it. As far as can you load up games and play them, i have had no issues loading up my steam games from it. Mine is always plugged into my laptops usb, however i do have to leave my laptop on dc power cause i run so many devices and software at once the battery dont last long.

- Answer Yes you can, if you have the disk formatted exfat. If you have formatted (erased in mac talk) to HFS+ use disk utility on your mac to format (erase) it to exfat. If you have to format it you will have to recopy your files.I believe it comes formatted in exfat. Exfat is a format that both machines can read and write.

- Answer No it does not. 7200 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) applies only to (traditional) rotating platter hard disks. The Samsung Portable T5 500GB External SSD is a Solid State Disk (SSD) that has no moving parts. In general, this disk is capable of transferring data much faster than a 7200 RPM hard disk. The actual performance will be determined by a number of factors such as the type of interface in use (USB 2.0, USB 3.1 Gen. 1, USB 3.1 Gen. 2), the type of the other device (e.g. disk) sending or receiving the data, the speed of the computer, and the number and size of the files. A few large files will transfer faster than many small files that contain the same total amount of data.

- Answer If your USB ports are blue its USB 3 and I'm pretty sure even a 2012 Samsung does have usb3. And while it won't see the full speed capable it will rock compared to other external drives you might buy and will be compatible with the new chromebook you buy from Best Buy because Google no longer supports the Chromebook.

- Answer This will work out of the box. However, the cost per GB is very high if you're just storing many games on it. It will have blazing fast load times for a few games, but then it will be full.

QuestionCan this be used as a backup drive with Time Machine for Macs?

- Answer Yes, it is compatible with Macs and is also dual platform if you partition the drive and format that partition portion in another format ie. PC(Windows). Format it on the Mac beforehand and set it up as a MAC OS extended journaled. A lot of times it will ask you if you want to use the newly formatted drive as a time machine back up drive after doing the reformatting. Eject and re insert the drive into the Mac and it will usually realize it is a time machine possibility and ask accordingly. if not, open MAC time machine app and choose it as the destination for time machine backs and enjoy!
