Hello The player (UBD-M9500) DOES have the ability to open and close the player using the remote. It also has the ability to start playing the disc using the remote. I own this player (UBD-M9500) and I am very happy with it. I also own one of the model # UBD-M8500 (which is one model number below the 9500) that I use in my bedroom and I am also very well pleased with it also. It also has the same ability to open, close and start playback using the remote that came with it. I hope this information has been helpful. Thank you.
