“I successfully connected rear speakers swa-8500s with hw-n550. However, when I apply the steps you outline to turn the volume up by hitting the up/down areas of the circle, it turns the rear speakers on and off. Does not allow to increase volume.”

On your remote, press the settings button until you see the "rear level" option on your soundbar. You can then adjust the volume from one to 6. The "rear speaker" option only turns the speakers on or off.
