You will want to buy extra when you buy the printer, you will go through the initial load pretty quickly, I would recommend the high capacity black cartridge

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, it comes with "starter" toner--black, cyan, yellow, and magenta. As I have just started using the printer I do not yet know how long the starter cartridges will last. Knowing Canon I expect that they will last a while, although not as long as the replacement cartridges they have available. In case you do not know this, Canon sells two versions of replacement toner cartridges for this printer--standard and high capacity. The high capacity cartridges cost more than the standard cartridges but of course they last longer. When it is time to get replacement toner cartridges I plan to buy the high capacity cartridges even though they cost more because in the long run they provide a better value and less cost per page of print. Also, in case you don't know this, laser printers--like this one--are more economical than ink jet type printers over the long run. Again, the toner cartridges will cost a good bit more than the cost of ink jet cartridges but you will get thousands of pages of print from a toner cartridge compared to hundreds from a liquid ink cartridge. I own and use both printer technologies. Another advantage of laser printers over ink jet printers is that unlike liquid ink, the dry toner powder does not dry up and clog the printer's printing mechanism if the printer sits unused for an extended period of time. The one area where ink jet printers do a better job is printing photos, which can be done on special photo paper.
