External power is not needed, but, to use this particular flash drive with an iPhone, you'll need an adaptor. The adaptor will have a USB female connector on one end and a lightning connector on the other. And, it will not require external power. Another option is to get a flash drive with the lightning connector built in,, like the recommendations that I've listed.

This product obviously has to have some amount of power to operate. There are products that SanDisk makes that plug directly into the lightning port. I would rather suggest that you consider a wireless SanDisk flash drive. It connects to the iPhone through onboard Wifi, you simply use the device with the SanDisk application and it works great.

You have to connect through a computer or game console to use the flash drive with an iphone.
