• You can use it for a time machine backup, but it is a bit overkill. You could use a standard portable hard drive and save money.

• Hi, please be informed that all our storage devices including the SSD Drives are simple plug and play storage devices and you can connect it with your iMac using the USB Type-C/A ports. However, in order to know how to create the backup/ auto backup of your iMac into an External SSD Drive, it would be best to contact Apple Support.
