If his laptop has an empty drive bay, which it likely does, yes it will fit, assuming the SSD he has now is a SATA drive and not an M.2 drive.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Likely will have no issues swapping the existing drive for this since they should be about the same size. Not sure if the laptop housing can accommodate a second drive. When swapping the primary, you'll have to close the existing drive to the new one or reload the laptop with the original restore disks. Keep in mind, some manufacturers keep the restore partition on the original hard drive and don't provide restore DVDs anymore (or they'll give you the option to create a set).

I'm guessing, but I'll bet I'm correct in saying that I doubt this drive would ever fit inside a 15 inch laptop. It's really designed to be used outside your device, not in. That being said, it makes an excellent secondary drive. It's lightning fast and awesome - reliable with speed. If I were you, I'd look for a computer service company to recommend an internal piece to update your son's hard drive. But you can't go wrong with this drive for external use. Enjoy.
