Check dimension specs online for the mounting bracket. Do not set plug behind this bracket. The important thing to know is where you want center of tv located and where mounting holes are located on rear of TV. I have experienced same problems you are asking about when switching TVs on same mount. My advice would be not to set plug until you know what TV and exact mount height. Studs I am sure will be set on 16" centers.
