The Tv will set about 2 1/2 inches away from the wall. It does sit parallel. Does not have to be fully extended to turn. As soon as the corner of the Tv is clear it will start to turn

Hi Trysta, 
This mount sits 3.25" from the wall when fully retracted. It does not have to be fully extended in order to swivel but the farther it is extended, the more swivel you will have available.
