If you have game pass you get this game automatically and there is no need to buy this. I did not have game pass and I got this on-sale for $20 so I don't have to pay the monthly fee for gamepass but if you are playing on the xbox you will need xbox gold. This is will work fine without gamepass.

No, but if you want to play it on the Xbox you at least need Xbox Live (Game Pass includes this). The digital version also comes with a copy for PC which does not require Xbox Live. The physical copy of the game only includes the Xbox version so buying digital is the way to go for Sea of Thieves. Lastly, I should mention that Sea of Thieves is a Game Pass title meaning that if you did have the service, you could play the game for free without have to buy it.
