Yes. It has to format itself to work with the Xbox One. When connected the Xbox One will ask you if you want to format it or use it as a media player. Chose format. You will lose everything that is installed on it. After it formats, you can use it in tandem with the internal hard drive. You can transfer what's on the internal drive to the external to free up space.
