• External power supply. Generally only the tiny ones with 2.5" internal drives can be powered from usb. Most anything in the larger form factors have 3.5" drives that require a 12 volt rail which usb can't supply, hence the power adapters.

• You must use it with the provided power cord. The USB bus won't provide enough power to spin it up.
