Seagate provides a data recovery tool, as do 3rd party vendors for do it yourself recovery. Seagate also has a recovery service where you can return it to them and they'll recover the data. It is not cheap for them to do so. I recently had one shoot craps and using 3rd party software was able to recovery about 75% of the data. As always I say backup the back up. If it is something I really need and can't live without, then I back up my data to two different HDD. You can never be safe enough.
