You can use a usb connection as a back up progress file and i think disc data but you cant install it as a internal because its a 3.5in version and PS4 needs 2.5 the small one

Unfortunately the PlayStation four does not support external hard drive's . You cannot use any hard drive through the USB port 
The PlayStation four does support up to 4 TB with an internal hard drive 
 Surprisingly if you open the bottom of the PlayStation four and insert an internal hard drive it does not void the warranty .
 Hopefully Sony well have an update to allow external like Microsoft has

It would have to be plugged in via USB and games will not save to it via PS4.

it would work if ya reformat the hardrive to fat32
