• The USB cable controls the power. If you turn off your PC to which the drive is connected. The drive will turn off until the PC is restarted.

• No, you don't have to leave this plugged in - only if you need to back up your equipment, or need to access files stored there.

• You only need to plug this drive in when you need to read from it or write to it. I don't know how much data you have, but I think a 1T or 2T portable drive might meet your needs.
