Depends. It's only USB3, so if you're doing any video editing that is beyond fairly basic cuts, or if you're attempting 4K editing, the USB3 will be a media bottleneck and the editing will be sluggish. As far as using it as both a media drive and a backup, it could do that, but sort of defeats the purpose of a backup. If the drive fails you lose your data AND the backup of it. The best solution is, as usual, costlier. For FCPX I use an 8TB RAID 0, and use this 8TB USB Drive as the backup for THAT.
