“This product also handles backing up an operating system? I am going to migrate to yosemite on my mac. I need a full backup of my mac. Will this product do that? I have a minimal amount of files - most of them are in the cloud.”

Yes it will/does backup to your Mac. I have a Macbook Pro and my files are also in icloud. However, I wanted an external backup, and the Seagate is reasonably priced and gives me the peace of mind. I have the latest system (OX system??) that came after the yosemite and it's working just fine. NO WORRIES !!

I created a bootable backup of my MacBook Pro (using CarbonCopy, SuperDuper, or other similar backup program), then made sure I could boot from it (selecting it as a startup disk and restarting). After I was comfortable with the backup, then it was time to move forward with the Yosemite upgrade.
