“I have a 1tb that I use to watch movies by setting it up to my tv via usb. Can I do the same w/ this? Will it still need the power cable? My 1tb just works when I plug it in but not sure if the bigger ones are different.”

Laptop USB drives are powered through the USB port. Desktop USB drives require a power cord plugged into the wall to function.

No this drive has its own power supply, it is not powered by the TV. You should look for a drive that says “portable”
