• You can if you just make copies of your data through WIndows Explorer keeping the same folder structure. There are also free synchronization apps that allow you to sync changes to your files with the copied backup. If you need more advanced functionality poke around on the web a bit, as there are free backup software programs that are actually very good and can do more than just sync data.

• Yes, you could use the integrated Windows or Apple software (Backup and Timemachine, respectively).
