“Does this unit need to be plugged in to actually play the games ,as my son uses a head set and the contoller. Dont know anything at all about this stuff, but hes on the ps4 24/7. Tells me he needs more storage space / memory ? . Help”

if the game down loaded on the unit then yes it needs to be connected

If the storage device isnt plugged in and he attemps to play thoes applications/ games it will populate on the PS4 internal storage as if he has never played it before.
