It is not required, unless you have the type of Sengled bulb that works through a hub. Sengled sells bulbs that connect directly over wi-fi only. These bulbs connect directly to your wireless network, and will not connect to a Sengled hub. The hub makes the Internet connection more efficient. Each bulb does not have to communicate to your network individually (which can result in bandwidth usage and traffic conflicts). Instead, when you send a command to turn off all of your bulbs, for example, the command is only sent once to the hub which in turn sends it to your network.
