“Will this work with the balcony door open? New downstairs neighbors are chainsmokers - all day, every day - and it's killing my lungs (probably me too). Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks”

Everyone needs to understand that it's rated for up to 1200 SqFt. If you open the balcony doors, you're now trying to filter the entire world of Sq Ft. Same goes with a large house. If you put it in living room with all doors open in a 3000 sq ft home you're exceeding it's intended operation. will still filter, but that added air will make it much less efficient. This things aren't miracle works. Close your balcony door and it will filter out what seeps in. If it's a true HEPA like it says, it will pull smoke particles out of the air.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I think it would. The air draws in from the back and blows out the sides. It has a large furnace type filter so should definitely help improve your air quality

However, keep in mind that if the outside air has pollutants, the unit will be less effective. I highly recommend running it with the windows and doors closed to prevent outside air from coming in. I’m sure you’ll be amazed at how good it is at removing the smoke and oder from your downstair chainsmokers.
