I would use the 3rd setting. It will do the same as 2 but a little less suction so it won't pull up the carpet. Hardwood mode won't work. You risk damaging your rug and/or vacuum.

Please try again later.Hello Pam, We would like you to know that the brushrolls on the Shark® DuoClean® Powered Lift-Away Speed™ (NV801) Bagless Upright Vacuum do not stop spinning when you switch between the 3 flooring types. With this being said, it is best to use the Thick Carpet / Area Rug setting when vacuuming shag carpeting. We also recommend checking with the manufacturer of the area rug to determine if the NV801 is compatible. We hope this information helps. The Customer Support Team
