At a normal volume, someone would probably hear it a little if they were sitting right beside you (I started music and held them out at arms length to test). 
But yes, these are viable for discrete listening.

Might depend how close you are to other people. If someone was sitting 3 feet from you in a library they may hear them at a normal volume

Absolutely suitable for those settings. I've used mine at work in the office and even asked a coworker if she could hear my music. She couldn't.
