In short no. But your tv needs to work with remote controls. The sidekick basically mirrors what your remote (of your choice does) for several commands. You take your current remote point it at the sidekick and the sidekick remembers that command. I use my sidekick to control my soundbar that I have attached to my tv.

The side kick solve for some of the older TVs out there that are not compatible with some newer streaming devices (like Roku and Apple TV) in that the provided remotes do not have the ability to control the TV (On / Off / Volume.) The Side Kick is an add on for these streaming devices remotes that are programable to control those TVs and mount the 2 remotes together. I'm using them with Roku streaming sticks and Apple TVs in the house connected to both smart and 'dumb' TVs allowing me to use the provided remotes and still have the On / Off / Volume together.

It acts as an addition to the roku remote which can control whatever basic functions from the TV. Ie power volume and input controls. It’s worth noting that the sidekick remote requires a working TV remote to program. It works by “learning” remote actions from the original remote. So you can program whatever you want to the buttons on the sidekick.
