To replace batteries, first, the smoke/CO2 detector has to be removed from its mounting base. There is a second, inner cover that also turns to remove, showing the batteries. Instructions for removal are printed on this cover. Pretty straightforward. Accessing the battery in the SimpliSafe smoke detectors are slightly different. There are 2 lithium C123A batteries in the detector. There is a note on the inner cover that states replace battery after 10 years. I purchased the detector this year and the batteries are dated 2023.
