Thanks for the question. Yes, the Sonance VP86R speakers can work outside as you describe; however, they are not designed to be used in areas that would expose them to excessive heat, cold, water, moisture, etc. Installing the speakers in a place that is open to outside elements could shorten the speaker's expected usable life so I cannot recommend them for outdoor use. We do have a speaker that is designed specifically for harsh environments; it's our Visual Performance Extreme line of speakers, which can be viewed here:
