Hi, and thank you for your question. There are a few differences. These speakers are designed with a detection circuit that tells it that it's powered to our Amp. There are three major benefits because of that. 1) Customized DSP for each model of speaker (outdoor, in-wall, in-ceiling) 2) Ability to trueplay tune the in-wall, and in-ceiling models (https://support.sonos.com/s/article/3251?language=en_US) 3) You can run up to three pairs of speakers of this on one Sonos Amp compared to 2 pairs.
