“Why is this so expensive as just a port to hook up to an already existing applifier? I have a whole house dedicated so Sonos but would like the option for my main system to sync. Is this the only option to do that?”

As far as I know this is the only option. This will basically turn your existing non-streaming setup into a streaming Sonos setup. The Port is replacing the generation 1 Sonos Connect. The Connect was cheaper and still might work in some setups I think.
