“I have wired speakers in my home which would have been connected to something in the AV closet (taken by previous owner). I am not sure what I need to allow for streaming music to them via my iphone. Any recommendations on how to proceed?”

You will need at a minimum to install a receiver in that AV closet, that has Bluetooth capability. Prior to doing so, you will need to learn what the RMS capability of those speakers are, so you don't provide too many watts and blow them.
