“the geek squad came out and added two gen 2 speakers to my S1 system. I bought a Gen3 sub and cannot add it to my S1 app. Do I need to buy a Gen 2 sub to add it to my system? I have 5 speakers that are S1 and dont want to spend that on new speakers.”

Due to the internal upgrades present in the Sub (Gen 3) it is not compatible with S1. You would need to purchase a Sub (Gen 2) to keep your system on S1. The only speaker that currently is ONLY S1 compatible is the Play:5 (Gen 1), along with the components the pre-2015 Connect and Connect:Amp. If your five speakers are not Play:5 (Gen 1) then they are S2 compatible and you could simply upgrade your entire system to take advantage of the advancements in the S2 app.
