I avoided sync issues by plugging my source directly to the TV(not the HTXT), and then connecting the TV to the HTXT via HDMI from the TV ARC input, (making it an audio output), or by the optical or analog output of the TV to the optical or analog input of the HTXT. I did not try the Sync control, but suspect it requires connection via the ARC input of the TV. If this was done then best to talk to Sony.

To close out the question, I'll post the answer I got to the same question when I posted it directly on Sony's customer community page. In short, the AV sync setting is just binary -- it causes some (not described in detail) syncing when turned on. (I couldn't tell any difference.) There is no way, actually, to make any adjustment -- either turning it on helps or it doesn't. I suspect it may actually only be useful if you are using the pass-thru function: taking video in on one or more of the three video-in HDMI connectors and outputting it to the TV thru the video-out HDMI connector, but that's only my guess, since I don't use that function.

In regards to your concern, for this feature to work, each product must be connected with an HDMI® cable and be setup to communicate through the HDMI connection. It will not work if all of the HDMI-connected products do not have the BRAVIA® Sync feature. The Sync function allows communication between Sony products such as TVs, Blu-ray Disc players, DVD players, and AV amplifiers that support the Control for HDMI function. Best regards, Oscar.

The answer said that both devices had to "have the Bravia sync feature." As far as I understand it, "Bravia sync" is just Sony's name for HDMI CEC (each brand, for some reason, chooses to give that feature its own brand-specific name) which is more-or-less an industry standard. So, let me ask again: what does it do and why doesn't it work with my Insignia brand TV, which otherwise seems to implement HDMI CEC just fine (it controls power, volume, and muting on the HT-XT1 exactly as one would expect it to.) If it *did* work, how would one "adjust the sound when the image and the sound are not in sync" which is what the manual says it does?
