Time Warner broadcasts in 1080 (at least it says that on the TV when it turns on). The quality of the picture is so amazing that I think I could do with a smaller screen in another room (have the 49"). It will be a while before 4K is available I think, but we're ready so we don't have to upgrade every couple of years!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The upscaling is industry leading. Netflix and a few other online services offer 4K, and DirectTV and Dish already have some in 4K and should be a full option in about 6months. Depending on cable provider they are all moving that way in about a year. Check with your provider for specific info.

For example, HDTV sets upconvert broadcast TV (480i) and DVDs (480i or 480p) to the highest format the set supports (720p, 1080i or 1080p). The feature reads the data on a standard DVD at 480P and maximizes the video resolution to best fit your HDMI compatible TV. This allows you to enjoy the best in video performance while delivering digital video and audio over one simple cable. I hope this helps, Dave
