“As I am shopping for this Sony tv which has diagonal.size 54.9"....I have to place above my fire place having 59" width, how long this diagonal size corrasponds to tv's horizontal base line ? Can I choose little larger tv to fit horizontal base?”

If your width is 59", then you can actually fit up to a 65" diagonal which tends to have 57" or 58" horizontal width.

Even with a 54.9 picture you are getting a wonderful size TV for the 59" width you would like to place the TV. It would appear a 60 in, with just a smaller screen would be too wide. Not knowing the size of your room, the 55" appears to be a good choice. Hope this helps.
