There's absolutely no bass, but the sound might be passable if you're not too picky. I could probably go without a sound bar if I absolutely was against the idea. I guess one thing to consider is that if you decide that the TVs sound isn't good enough for your situation, you could always add a sound bar later. That said... The sound of this TV does continue the general trajectory of built-in speakers getting worse and worse year after year. For instance, I had a 50" plasma TV 10 years ago and the sound on that was considerably better than this Sony 70". And even back then built-in speakers were starting to get a bad reputation. Also, a few years ago I bought a 55" LED TV from the 2014 model year, and even that had slightly better built-in sound than this current generation Sony. Now I've always had surround sound systems hooked up to my TV's, but in the past I only used that for movies. Regular TV I would always use the TV's own speakers. This time around, though, with this Sony 70", I'm going to switch to watching even just regular TV using the surround sound system. Part of that is because the built-in speakers, even if not horrible here, are nevertheless worse than my previous TVs. The other part is, I suppose, because a TV of this large size just deserves a bigger sound than the built-ins provide. In my opinion, that is,
