The 850D does not have any kind of local dimming and has an IPS panel. IPS panels do provide a wider viewing angle, but the contrast ratio suffers. When daylight or indoor lighting is present, this tv will look good, but in the absence of ambient lighting, blacks will be grayish, and appear to glow. The 940D has full array local dimming and a VA panel. These features will dramatically improve contrast, and the blacks in a dark room will truly be black. The 850D is a good TV, but if you see them side by side in a dark room, the 940D will look much better.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.940D has a more powerful processor which helps upscale content and make all content appear 4K. Before the Z9 came out this was the top dog in Sony TV. Definitely think it's worth it if you're going 75 inch.
