The 900E has an array of LED backlights that can be changed in intensity based on the picture being displayed on the LCD panel in front of the LEDs. Having localized control of the backlighting behind the LCD panel helps to allow things like dark content to appear very dark, yet have the intended detail. With static backlighting, the same content would appear grey due to the LED backlights bleeding through the LCD panel. Having seen how the 900E handles mixed scenes of very bright and dark content, the local dimming works very well and I wouldn't go with a set that didn't have it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I just brought a 900E TV. I am not an expert, but my understadning of the main difference between 850E and 900E is how the local dimming is implemented. 850E has edge dimming vs. 900E local dimming. Dimming improves contrast ratio so bright parts of the image stays brighter and darker parts of the same image stays darker. Full array local dimming can implement multiple zones across the screen to improve this contrast (such as 900E) vs. dimming from the edges of screen (such as 850E). Local dimming is superior and more expensive technology compare to edge dimming. Sony, however, does not disclose how many zones of local or edge dimming are built into their TV sets. To my non expert eyes, pictures are brighter with greater contrast of brighter vs darker colors on the 900E vs. 850E. I probably may not have noticed such difference if not due to side by side comparion at the store. But doing so does give you the idea of difference in technology. 900E is a better TV than 850E but is the cost justified and how much more are you willing to pay for the better technology. Only you can answer that question as both TV sets are great. Many online experts do test and rate the 900E TV set very high (ie rtings.com review of 900E).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. As it was explained to me(which may not be right) it is a micro management of the picture to increase the depth apearance.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hi Mick, It is a feature on LED TVs that dims the backlight behind parts of the screen that are displaying black. This makes blacks appear deeper and darker. Thanks. ~Ralph
