For the average consumer, nothing. Technically, the Z9D has more than double the FALD zones, around 600 compared to the 250, which will produce much better black levels with deeper and richer blacks. This will allow less blooming while watching HDR content. Additionally, the Z9D gets slightly brighter than the 940E, which makes HDR content pop a bit more. However, the Z9D is about $3,000 more expensive than the 940E, and for 90% of consumers, not worth the extra chunk of change.

I can tell you the sets are different in many different aspects but I do not believe the $4,700 as of today is worth the upgrade unless the abysmal slow pixel response on the X940E is an issue for you as much as it was for me. The X940E has a confirmed 256 local dimming zones vs 75Z9D which has 850 individual dimmable LEDS. The Z9d can also get about 400 nits brighter which means insane highlights in HDR content. Colors are better and more vivid in Z9D but blacks are better on X940E than on 75Z9D. Shadow detail is better on Z9D than X940E (pick your poison, A1E OLED also crushes shadow detail) Black letterbox bars on movies tend to stay pitch black on X940E not quite OLED blackhole black but enough to convince that it is true black. That is because of the panel X940E uses but that also contributes to much slower pixel response leaving exaggerated trailing and smearing where details should be shown in any basic motion. Most people are not sensitive to this but I am extremely sensitive and I noticed it immediately. All in all I am way happier with 75Z9D but not happy that I paid an arm and leg for it. I also tried A1E but am not convinced true blacks make that much a difference as much as specular highlights on the Z9D for HDR content.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Full array vs individual led dimming. Z9D is much more accurate with colors due to the individual led dimming technology
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.X940E has 128 dimmable zones which means you dont get as precise local dimming but Sony has an excellent algorithm to minimize light bleed or clouding. Some of the bright scenes will bleed into darker areas. The Z9D has about 1000 individual leds that can all be individually controlled and dimmed giving you much higher precsion in bright spots while also keeping darks right next to bright peaks with minimal bleed into dark areas.
